But then he discovered suffering humanity, and immediately left his pampered life to become a penniless, wandering saddhu, a seeker of enlightenment. He tried the ascetic path of near-starvation, but finally settled on the "middle way," health and well-being without gluttony. He sat under a bodhi tree for a long time, some say seven years, determined to achieve enlightenment. And he did!--not tempted by the seductions of the world which were offered to him by Maya, and not killed by the arrows shot at him, which turned into flowers. Because he didn't think people would be able to receive his understanding, he nearly decided to become a simple hermit. But friends convinced him that the world needed his teaching, and so he developed the Four Noble Truths, the Eight-fold Path, and other teachings of infinite wisdom. He laid his body down when he was 80 years old. His original teachings have branched into Tibetan Buddhism, Zen Buddhism, and others, each with unique slants but all based on the Buddha's wisdom. One of the greatest gifts of Buddhism is the Mahayana, or "great vehicle," teaching in which a person takes the Boddhisattva Vow, to work for the end of suffering for all sentient beings, as long as it takes.
