The Chinese invaded Tibet in 1950, and after this he was ever-more tightly controlled. Finally, believing the Chinese were planning to take his life, he fled Tibet in 1959 and took up residence in Dharamsala in northern India. There he works to re-establish the freedom of his homeland, and has become a great leader for world peace. He writes and travels widely, giving talks and ceremonies.
