The present (fourteenth) Dalai Lama was born in Tibet in 1935. Recognized at age four as the reincarnation of the previous Dalai Lama, he was the spiritual ruler of his country from 1940 to 1959.

The Chinese invaded Tibet in 1950, and after this he was ever-more tightly controlled. Finally, believing the Chinese were planning to take his life, he fled Tibet in 1959 and took up residence in Dharamsala in northern India. There he works to re-establish the freedom of his homeland, and has become a great leader for world peace. He writes and travels widely, giving talks and ceremonies.
